Apple Tests Bold Colors for New Budget MacBook

Choosing your next MacBook might soon come down to picking a color—especially if you’re eyeing the new budget MacBook. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been testing a range of lively hues for its upcoming entry-level model, including light yellow, light green, blue, and pink.

In addition to these bold options, the company has also trialed classic finishes like silver and dark gray. However, Gurman notes that not all six colors will make the final cut. That said, Apple has clearly grown more comfortable with playful palettes in recent years. For example, it refreshed the iMac in 2024 with seven colors and replaced space gray with sky blue on the latest MacBook Air.

Beyond aesthetics, the budget MacBook is shaping up to be a strategic product for students and enterprise users. Rumors suggest it will carry a price tag between $699 and $799. To hit that lower range, Apple plans to use chips originally designed for iPhones—likely the A18 Pro from the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Of course, cost-cutting may affect other areas. The company could reduce specs, limit ports, or use a simpler display. Nevertheless, Gurman reports one key area won’t be compromised: the build quality. Instead of switching to plastic, Apple will use a new manufacturing process to craft lightweight aluminum shells—maintaining premium feel even at a lower price.

Best of all, we may not have to wait long. Gurman says Apple will unveil the budget MacBook at a special event in March 2026. When it arrives, it could offer the rare combination of style, durability, and affordability—making it one of the most accessible MacBooks in years.
